JEE Mains and JEE Advanced are both entrance examinations for admission to undergraduate engineering programs in various engineering colleges in India.
JEE Mains is the more widely taken of the two exams, and is required for admission to National Institutes of Technology (NITs), Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs), and other centrally-funded technical institutes. It is also a qualifying exam for JEE Advanced, which is the exam required for admission to the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs).
JEE Mains is held twice a year, usually in January and April, and consists of two papers: Paper 1 for admission to B.E./B.Tech programs, and Paper 2 for admission to B.Arch/B.Planning programs. The exam is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA).
JEE Advanced, on the other hand, is held only once a year, usually in May or June, and is considered to be more difficult than JEE Mains. It is conducted by one of the seven IITs on a rotational basis. The exam consists of two papers, both of which must be taken on the same day.
Both JEE Mains and JEE Advanced are computer-based tests and consist of multiple choice questions. To be eligible for JEE Advanced, a candidate must have secured a minimum percentile in JEE Mains. Also, only the top 2,50,000 candidates based on their JEE Mains score are eligible to appear for JEE Advanced.
